CANADA
PURPOSE OF YOUR VISIT?
It felt so funny to be travelling back to Canada but on a limited schedule and as a tourist instead of having it feel like coming back home. We had a very tight schedule over the week that we were back in our home country - so much so that we managed to visit two provinces (both my family and my wife's family)!
The best part was trying to explain to the Customs Officer at the Calgary International Airport that I am a citizen and resident of Canada, but I am currently also living and working in Germany.
The rest of the week was as follows.
monday
Right after we landed, we grabbed a BMW and hit the TransCanada Highway for our six hour trek to visit my in-laws. The mountains were remarkably beautiful and I loved getting to spend non-wifi time with my wife during the drive. It is always amazing to spend time with my German family in the middle of beautiful British Columbia.
tuesday
We could never really survive without WiFi so Tuesday we camped out at my mother-in-law's beautiful cafe in the village of Nakusp. Delicious breakfast food all day plus cell service = bonus!
wednesday
The next morning, we (already!) left to come back to Calgary for the remainder of our trip. There was literally six stops at Tim Hortons as we are essentially obsessed with Extra Large Two Milk Two Sweetener Steeped Teas.
thursday
My downtown Calgary day! I had brunch with my parents, then lunch with an old colleague, then coffee with the homie (who introduced me to Caffe Trieste!), then another coffee date with my CE Global crew, then off to a drinks rendezvous with my old colleague, and then to the Mill St grand opening.
friday
On Friday we ran all of our banking, insurance, and cell phone errands, and that evening, we also got a chance to visit the brand new Sub Rosa club in Calgary's downtown. They made a mean Smokey Lemonade (which I made a short video of because it was seriously so cool!).
saturday
On Saturday, we got together with all of our Calgary people - old colleagues, old friends, and family, to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary, to reunite from Prague, and to talk all things Berlin. The night ended around... 6:30 am at Denny's (of course).
sunday
Somehow we woke up the next morning and ate another sixteen of the home-cooked meals my mom had been preparing for weeks. Our flight home was via London and then to Berlin. I wasn't joking when I said this was a packed week. This was no vacation, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. I loved seeing everyone and driving around my old city.
It was very ... interesting being back home. Well, I wasn't even home; we stayed in my parents' house which was amazing. They made sure everything was just right in the guest suite, down to our custom monogrammed towels and our favorite bed linens. I wish I could come home every week just to enjoy that time with them (and eat my mom's food!). What do you love most about being back home?
