Despite my criticism of the mass appeal of Christian Louboutin shoes, nobody can deny that the red sole is one of the most recognizable status symbols in the fashion world – a sheer marketing genius. And you have to hand it to Mr. Louboutin; he really does take this whole ‘fashion is art’ thing to a whole new level. In the recent book published to commemorate twenty years of shoe making, with contributions by various writers and photographs, the journey from Chanel to Yves Saint Laurent and then to shoe making is chronicled in a type of photo-biography. Who else was able to take one basic thing – a shoe – and make it one of the most coveted fashion item? The images that I’ve selected to post are a departure from the usual decadent and noisy editorials that Louboutins usually find themselves in. I like the almost clinical feel of these shots, and the clever use of natural magnification to highlight details and silhouettes of these shoe masterpieces.
