The incredible milestone of turning fifty is a highly celebrated and important ritual in anyone’s life, so when my mom phoned me in Amsterdam to tell me my dad had decided that a “nice dinner with the family” would suffice for birthday celebrations, I was furious. I politely told her I had to go, called my dad on his cell-phone, and demanded he get in touch with our usual contact at the Sheraton Hotel in Calgary. Within an hour, I was having the floor plan and contract emailed to me, and just like that, I began rush-planning a quickly approaching date. At least being in Europe gave me time to find something dope to wear, but with that out of the way, I came back and hit the ground running. But if any of you know me even remotely well, you know that this kinda thing has somehow become one of my specialties. Needless to say, the flowers, cake, decorations, slide-show, program, music, menu, party-favors, and everything in between came together nicely in the end.
