Being an Expectant Father on Father’s Day

This Father's Day, I am an expectant father, and it feels surreal. But how did we get here? Before the world went into official lockdown and before the WHO declared a worldwide pandemic, Monika and I were in Costa Mujeres in Mexico, celebrating our ten year dating anniversary. As always, we were enjoying everything a Mexican luxury resort has to offer, but of course, we were also working away capturing content as much as we could. We were honoured to partner with Sunwing Vacations for this trip - and excited to capture this beautiful place.

On our last full day in Mexico, when we had finished all the content we planned to capture, we shelled out a few hours during the day to just chill out in the many poolside cabanas available at the Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres. As we got settled in, a server approached us promptly, introduced himself (his name was Angel) and said he had seen us running around the whole week, and was happy we were relaxing now. We thanked him, and he immediately responded "are you here for your honeymoon?".

We laughed and said, actually no, we've been married almost five years, and are celebrating ten years of dating. He left, and returned saying "okay well it's time to make a baby then and I've brought you baby shots". We laughed and said we don't do shots anymore, but he persisted, and right there in the cabana, both Monika and I cheers'd to ten years of happinesses, and shot back 'baby shots' from a server named angel.

That was March 13, 2020. Fast forward to April 1, 2020, and Monika and I sat together, peering over a pregnancy test, for the first time ever, and laughed uncontrollably when the lines clearly indicated "PREGNANT". Being the planners and organizers that we are, we intentionally made no plan or schedule for a little one in our life - we had discussed it in the past and decided that whenever it happened, if it ever did, would be that. And here we were, weeks after taking baby shots from Angel in Mexico, expecting our first child. During the heart of the Covid-19 lockdown in Canada, we had a little life growing and had the best little secret. It really allowed us to soak in this news, but of course, we were also so excited to share with our closest when the time was right!
