My god-brother and cousin visited me, along with his family, this past July from Kentucy in the United States. His mother, my god-mother, is my father’s youngest sister, and spent the years before her marriage living at my home with my brother and parents in Pakistan. Hence our close relationship and her propensity to ‘get’ me. Seeing her after almost a decade was an emotional experience, with her children grown up and her career established. The intriguing thing about my aunt is her children; her second oldest son has the same birthday as me, and looked identical to me until he was around 6 years old, and still has the same mannerisms that I did when I was a child. Benny, pictured about, is her youngest son, and when we showed him my baby pictures, he was convinced that it was actually him in the photos, and not me. Him and I spent most of our time together, and not surprisingly, he taught me a lot about myself. Isn’t family and genetics a marvelous thing? How – out of my dad’s six sisters – his youngest would have children that looked exactly like me (and my father), and act exactly like me? It was such an endearing experience, and he’s such a little cutie. Perhaps he gave me a glimpse of what it might be one day to be a father.
