Has luxury lost its luster? I know there have been various books and articles written on the topic, with the emergence of both social media and the age of the blogger, but at its root, is all of the apparent glitz and glam of fashion still relevant? Furthermore, what exactly is meant by the term fashion anyway? While websites and blogs are great at bringing to-the-minute, current trends right to our screens and fingertips, how does this aid with the inflated reality of the whole situation? Look at the hottest trend pieces, like the Chanel Hula Hoop bag, paraded through fashion week in New York by Kyle Anderson, Accessories Editor for Marie Claire magazine – does everyone have access to these pieces, either financially or position wise? Does it help that the shoes fresh off the runway are being worn by all those who work in the industry, to make us outside lust and crave the ridiculous price tag and the uncomfortable reality of wearing such pieces? And what help do web-markets like iOffer and Etsy do, where blatant replicas are ripe for the picking, fresh from China? Do I sound bitter? I think I might be. Where is the luxury in this industry? Who really buys their pieces, and who gets sponsored to wear things in their outfit posts? To the fashion shows? Out around town? What skill and experience help land the job, and where does family, connection and bank account value come into play? Oh fashion, you never fail to allude me.
