Right before we jetted off to Europe for one of the busiest times of the year (hello Fashion Month!), we went on a last minute trip with Sunwing Vacations to a little known island in Northern Mexico called Holbox, (pronounced Hole-Bush).
For this reason, there are no paved roads in town, only sandy lanes, where virtually zero cars travel. There is golf carts and bikes to get around, but more people just walk around (barefoot).
And we had no idea how much we would fall in love with this little oasis, so today, I am sharing just four reasons why you also have to go here at least once in your life.
-- one: the location --
Isla Holbox is reachable only be Ferry, which departs every hour, from a port which is about an hour north from Cancun. That remoteness already makes it idyllic and a bit untouched by major infrastructure.
-- two: the accommodations --
Unlike the rest of Mexico, this particular island doesn't boast massive all-inclusive resorts. Instead, there are boutique design hotels dotting the shore of the majestic beach. We checked into the modern Mystique Blue Suites and more then the laid back luxury offerings, it was the hospitality of the staff that left us floored.
We dined on fresh ceviche, tons of beef and seafood tacos, and mango shakes. A personal favourite was the brunch spot Painapol, which instantly transported us back to Bali with its menu offerings, its ambiance, and its staff. (By the way, we also produced a YouTube video highlighting all of this!)
-- three: the food --
Because the island offers only boutique suite and apartment accommodations, all the visitors and locals head out to find dining for every meal. This means that Holbox offers some of the best, most competitively priced, and freshest cuisine.
-- four: the sunsets --
We've seen all of the world's majestic sunsets: Thailand, Santorini, Marrakech, and Holbox holds a top spot for spectacular and breathtaking sunsets. Every night, we found a different beach bar to settle into, with locals and tourists, to just watch the sun make its dance in the sky and slowly set to welcome the night. It was truly a magical experience each night.
We're so fortunate that we got to discover what people call Mexico's best kept secret. Even though we've never been to Tulum, we would 100% pick Holbox to return to again and again.
A huge thank you to everyone at the beautiful
Sunwing Vacations + Mystique Blue Holbox for
hosting us in Mexico.
