Anyone that knows me should know that they will be hard pressed to find me going to work, going for groceries or going to dinner without a Louis bag in tote. Thanks to Kanye West and exposure to jet-setting Americans at the US Terminal where I held my part-time job during high school, I have been a looooong time fan of the world famous leather goods manufacturer. So you can imagine my delight when the illustrious Nicolas Ghesquière was named Creative Director for the massive fashion powerhouse. Although Marc Jacobs had a giant impact on the brand and has bridged the gap between trunks and luggage to ready-to-wear and accessories, I think the time was right for some fresh European talent to touch the world-renowned Louis Vuitton. And while Nicolas is still dealing with some type of legal issues resulting from his departure from Balenciaga, no one can argue the immense impact he had on that atelier. But alas, I digress. At the Louis Vuitton RTW FW14 show in Paris last week, Ghesquière remained true to Louis Vuitton’s classic aesthetic of finely crafted and label heavy handbags, while subtly and tactfully injecting his own tell-tale play with architectural clean lines. Classic bags like the Speedy and the Alma were both re-introduced but it also felt like they were being paid homage to, and in the same token, Nicolas debuted a new handbag, the Petite Malle bag, which is a miniture LV trunk. Innovation in leather, suede and skin treatment left me longing for more and more of these lust-worthy bags. No matter what Célines or Wangs happen to be the current “IT” bag, nothing will ever beat a gorgeously designed and world-coveted Louis Vuitton.
