THE GATEWAY BROGUE BY JOHN FLEUVOG
They say that you should wear new shoes to your graduation ceremony, because immediately after, not only should you be walking taller, but you will begin a brand new path in your life. Whatever the reason – luck or fashion – I visited my favorite shoe store on Calgary’s Stephen Avenue over the weekend to find myself the perfect shoe to wear under the traditional robes of the University of Calgary. Why? Because today, June 5 2012, marks one of the most important days in my life: my convocation ceremony. I will finally be the proud recipient of my degree. Blood and tears don’t cut it; we’re talking all-nighters, split shifts at work, online courses while on vacation, mad-dashes to the one outlet in the lecture theatre, frantic impromptu study groups and a coffee-only diet on a strict student budget. I even sacrificed my dream of visiting fashion shows to focus on my studies. All for this day. This moment when I get to walk on stage and be awarded my degree. People have been congratulating me and asking how excited I am, and to be honest, it hasn’t hit me just yet. These kind of moments don’t come along too often. I’m excited to relish in it.
