By now, I am sure you have heard of a 'digital detox' - the concept of powering down and logging off from all the devices. The funny thing is, this inherently implies that anything digital is an addiction and requires a detox. Now, I'm not here to argue for and against, but I did partake in my own mini detox. For me, Instagram is such an integral application, that it's had a huge hand in shaping my current career.
And it took me by a big surprise when I realized I hadn't logged out of the app in almost five years? Probably even longer. And so, after fulfilling my contractual obligations last week, I did something. I logged out of Instagram. And though I often used to laugh at those who talked about withdrawals and these funny realizations after being offline, I was shocked at my own reactions.
Checking the app first thing in the morning and also right before falling asleep definitely creates a type of dependency. And I'll be the first to admit that the competitive and visual nature of the platform can be daunting. But I've also always, always, loved the inspiration and creativity that it sparks. The community that it builds and the many many people it can uplift and motivate is amazing.
But long story short is this: I made the decision to log out. And to try it for a week. And what were my conclusions? I do really love Instagram but it was truly awesome to not be constantly checking it. Or to be thinking I should document something for Stories. Or to think about engaging with others. I enjoyed the time away. But at the same time, I also enjoy my time on the app, and as I mentioned, it's part of the reason I can do what I do. Creating content and telling inspiring stories is so intertwined with Instagram, and I love that.
As with absolutely everything, moderation is everything. We should never be so hooked in to not be able to step away. From Instagram, from our phones, from our jobs, from all of it. And as the lines between work and pleasure, inspiration versus competition, comparison versus discrimination, become blurrier, it's more important than ever to practice moderation. Enjoy your phone, enjoy the community, enjoy the speed and breadth of information on the internet. But also, stop. Disconnect, and reconnect with your surroundings.
Have you logged out of Instagram recently? For how long? How did you find it?
