One of the most authentic Moroccan experiences you can partake in is staying in a traditional Riad in the Medina of Marrakech.
We were so lucky to experience two very different Marrakech's: one in the lap of luxury at the Fairmont Royal Palm and then afterwards, in the centre of the thousands of years old city called the Medina. The Riad Port Royale was the perfect guest house for our needs - aesthetic, hospitable, courteous, and with the most beautiful and cosy feeling.
The famous courtyard in the centre with the pool, and generous breakfast spread, the attention to detail - this is all authentic living dating back hundreds and hundreds of years, and truly, we could have spent our entire time in the Medina holed up at our Riad, just basking in the calm tranquility of it all.
This would truly be one of my biggest recommendation - find a centrally located Riad and book yourself a few nights. Because while most of the time, luxury travel means world class iconic hospitality brands, in certain cases, staying in the heart of the Medina is also a different kind of luxury. A kind of 'going back in time' and experiencing a completely different type of luxury, which was the origination of the travel industry at all, in my opinion.
And while we definitely didn't get to enjoy as much time at the Riad Port Royale as I would have wanted to, the moments we did get there were so wonderful, thanks in part to the amazing staff and management that literally went out of their way to ensure we had an incredibly memorable stay in the old centre of Marrakech.
Would you stay in a Riad? Have you been to Marrakech?
