The day after the Spring/Summer 2010 show for Burberry Prorsum, I was invited to take a grand tour of the breathtaking facilities located at Horseferry House, on Horseferry Road, in London, house of the prestigious house of royal fashion: Burberry. Pictured above is a shot of the showroom; which consists of the entire first and basement level. This high-security facility has everything; from a Starbucks kiosk connected to a warm breakfast/lunch cafeteria, to a gym and showers downstairs, an in-house photo studio, and floors upon floors of office space. It was so unbelievable that just the night prior, the entire showroom space had been transformed into a thumpin’ and bumpin’ nightclub. The entire space, every detail, was orchestrated by the amazingly talented Christopher Bailey, who I ran into that day in the Menswear downstairs. Buying teams from across the world come to the Global Headquarters, where the entire collection is on display (currently Spring/Summer 2010), and Buyers get to take their time, in a comfortable environment, and literally go through every single piece; from watches, bangles and scarves, to trenches, dresses, belts and boots, and pick what they would like to purchase for their own stores. Thus the stylish iMacs with refreshments close at hand. It was so surreal for me to walk through the shelves and see items that I had just seen on the runway the night before. And of course, crazier even to see Mr. Bailey, hard at work, at one of those tables. I took the elevator to the top floor, where the design and concept teams meet, and I obviously wasn’t allowed anywhere near those office spaces.
