MERCY – KANYE WEST FT. BIG SEAN, PUSHA-T & 2 CHAINZ
Remember when my original blog, I’m Your Biggest Competition, was dedicated to sneakers, hip-hop and the street style of Kanye and Pharrell? Well, I do. And no matter how much I’ve grown – naturally, academically and style-wise, I am still an avid hip-hop maniac. I grew up on this -ish. So when Ye released the video for this deadly song a few weeks ago, I was just as excited as you other hip-hop-heads to log unto YouTube and see what the creative genius had to present. There is so much I love about this video: the black and white, the straight-off-the-runway fashion (I get Givenchy vibes from the styling), the absence of “video-ho”s and most importantly, a video centered around the ultra-luxury Lamborghini Murciélago which doesn’t repeatedly pan the illustrious status symbol. No, we don’t see shots of the interior or decals of the namesake car during this video. Instead, there’s Art. Fashion. Camaraderie. Illusions of the eye. The understated “hood” aspect of a bunch of buddies chillin’ in the underground parking garage, jamming out to a mad real beat. Honestly Kanye, keep on doing you. I was pleasantly refreshed by this healthy departure from typical hip-hop culture.
