When we all celebrated Christmas in 2019, I think it’s safe to to say that none of us could have imagined how our Christmases in 2020 would have looked like. On top of a global pandemic that everyone else was dealing with, we moved into a brand new home, and just last month, welcomed our very own baby into the world. It all still feels a bit surreal. And as you definitely know by now, we are obsessed with Christmas. So Covid or not, our very first Christmas with our newborn baby was going to be extra special, and we made sure it really was.
Of course, we also had a few Covid firsts that we hope are NOT traditions, including a Christmas Eve dinner via Zoom with my family, followed by a virtual Secret Santa gift unwrapping. There is no way to sugar coat this - it was definitely a bit depressing, and definitely not what we expected for our baby girls first ever Christmas.
But honestly, we made the best of it just like everyone else did and are happy to make the sacrifice this year to do our part in order to bring down the cases.
We stuck true to our tried-and-true traditions: beginning the celebrations on Christmas Eve, hitting up Holts with a Starbucks Holiday Drink in hand, and opening Secret Santa Gifts the night before Christmas. But we also started a few new traditions this year, like Stockings hung from the fireplace, and like papa (that’s me! what!) preparing Christmas breakfast for the morning of the 25th.
We definitely still decorated our annual commemorative ornaments and decorated gingerbread bread people into outfits for a festive fashion show, but we also live-streamed the Nutcracker from Russia (thanks Covid for bringing so many things online) and we introduced our new favourite of Coquitos into our Christmas celebrations.
Our little Avia Ocean turned one month old on December 22, so she slept most of the day, which was expected, and we sadly did not see any family or friends. But we snuggled up at home, watched Home Alone 1 and 2, and my wife and I prepared a German holiday spread of Mutzbraten, Knodel and Rotkraut with all the fixings.
Did we overload a bit with Christmas gifts this year? I would say no, but as always, Monika would say “ummm yes”. Truly, all we need is each other and good health for Christmas this year. But as I always say, a little Chanel never hurt anybody. For the first time ever, the three of us wish you a very happy Christmas and a happy new year! How did you celebrate this year?
We hope you all had a healthy
and safe Holiday Season!
