So in case you're just tuning in, in March of this year, we discovered we were pregnant, and in May, we told our families, and fast forward to August, we hosted a socially distanced outdoor boho picnic baby shower.
With a ton of help from our siblings and close friends, we managed to create a midsummer picnic theme in my parent's expansive backyard, complete with fresh sheets of laundry hanging on clothes lines, white lanterns floating in the sky, one long picnic table reminiscent of our wedding, pampas grass and eucalyptus as key accents, and matching flower crowns for the mama and the "mama maids" as my sister called her and all the other girls who were also bridesmaids.
And today, I am sharing three simple ways that we really personalized our baby shower, and how you can too.
CUSTOM TYPOGRAPHY + SIGNAGE
Monika and I found special fonts for both a cursive, a serif, and a tiny block font, and decided on a general motif - which in our case was these beautiful water coloured Eucalyptus leaf stems. With this, we designed a Welcome Sign, and corresponding signs for sanitizers, for the guestbook, for each category of drink menu, for the sweets table, for every place setting, and framed here and there through the space. This really helped to bring the event together.
AN INTERACTIVE GUESTBOOK + ART PIECE
Having a Polaroid at an event is a great way to capture more vintage, once-in-a-moment memories, but we had some old memories from us dating, our wedding, and us finding out we were pregnant, printed in the same style as the Fujifilm Instax camera film. This brought a visual backstory to the reason for the event, and we kept the roped clothespin and hung them up in baby's nursery, so we can show her all the many people who showered her with love before she was born.
SWEETS FROM MANY CULTURES
For our wedding, Monika's mom baked a beautiful cake in Canada, carried it on a plane to the Czech Republic, and we designed an entire event - an afternoon tea party - to enjoy the cake. That day, we also served a special dessert from Pakistan: Barfi, a dense milk-based sweet from the Indian subcontinent, and a type of mithai. We also had macarons fresh from Paris served at that tea. And so, for our baby shower, we mimicked the same menu and honoured all our favourite cultures.
I am so excited that after almost seven years, my entire family is going on a trip together, and for none other then my dad. He truly does a lot of his family, and we can't wait to celebrate him with love and good times.
