Yesterday, I had an amazing realization: my drivers license (which had expired on my birthday last month) had still not been renewed. My Visa credit card had also expired the day after my birthday. My American Express card had just also (ironically) expired. And my car was in the shop due to the minor single-vehicle collision I was in just before leaving for Fashion Week / New York. So in essence, I had no way of getting around to anywhere, and no way to prove that I could get around or prove that I was who I said I was, and no means of paying for anything even if I could get around. It was a strange, sad and scary realization of how much we depend on very singular and independent organizations and agencies to help us to identify ourselves and function within society. I literally felt like I was fading away from the world, based on these non-tangible man-made identifiers. It was a good and very real reminder to ensure that material things like cars and credit cards should not and can not define who I am or what my worth is, right?
