BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA
I just got back to Berlin from another awesome weekend in a different country; this time, it was Slovakia. Last week, it was Portugal, and in the next two weeks, it will be the United Arab Emirates. While we always had a penchant for packing our suitcases, boarding planes, and waking up in new cities, we never really took this so seriously until we moved to Europe last year. Being here (in what some would consider the geographical center of the world), its logistically easy for Monika and I to pick a country, find a hotel, and book a flight.
This has, of course, come with a lot of discovery. Discovery of the world around us, and of the person within. My parents can confirm that as a young child, I used to pack for a vacation weeks - sometimes months! - in advance. Now, with both the length and frequency of our trips, I am lucky if I pack the night before. This is not because I have become careless or unorganized. Its because now I know precisely what I want to bring with me, and moreover, its the adventure (and not the planning) which excites me the most about a new place.
Of course, this is also something which comes with age and experience, and of course also with a minimal no-fuss wife.
the real discovery
Apart from the in-cabin allowable goods and the time needed before boarding closes, what I have really learnt through all this travel is that no plan will ever go as planned. No itinerary is flawless, and the fun really begins when you go off the grid. When you allow circumstance, destiny and fate to take control, amazing things can happen. And not to speak too metaphorically, but the best cuisine, the best photo location, the greatest sunset, all have been moments that were not planned, but then we stumbled upon as we have trekked through these major European cities.
Over the years, I have learnt more and more to let go of the things that I can not control, but recently, I have learnt the important lesson of letting go of the things that I can control, too. Sometimes, it is necessary to throw caution to the wind and just go on with your bad self.
Hard as it may be for me, I am learning to embrace - and actually enjoy - this new way of being. More relaxed, less planned, and somehow, more authentic? The moral of the story is, go out and explore! You never know what you will discover about yourself.
