There are few things in life that are more exciting then getting to explore a brand new country, and although we just got to discover the beautiful island of Barbados, we did not hesitate once when booking another trip to the Caribbean, this time to the island country of Curaçao. This little known nation is a Lesser Antilles island in the southern Caribbean Sea (very close to Venezuela) and is part of Dutch Caribbean region.
Thankfully, the island has a lot to offer in terms of interesting things to see and do. The capital city is called Willemstad, and its colourful pastel harbourfront buildings are a UNESCO World Heritage site. These were truly a spectacular thing to witness in person. The temperature on the island remained sunny but balmy, and we managed to grab some groceries and indulge in tons of local fruits.
And although you never really need a reason to hop on a plane, when its a birthday, it becomes that much easier to justify, right? So with Monika's birthday wedged neatly in the middle, we headed for a full seven days to Curaçao, with very little planned in terms of an agenda. Our daily schedule there included poolside laptop-ing, beach sunset-ing, tons of food, and a lot of Netflix.
The resort we choose for this stay, The Floris Suite Hotel, is an adults-only all suite hotel, with tons of beautiful spaces to relax and chill out. Would definitely recommend it! The onsite spa offered tons of amenities, and the happy hour every day attracted all the guests to the pool bar. This wasn't an all-inclusive hotel though, which we actually didn't mind.
Monika also has a habit of collecting coral and rocks she finds on the beach (I'm telling you she's an actual mermaid!) and was enamoured with this heart shaped coral/rock. She brought it home. It now sits on our dresser beside the coral she collected from Cuba and Barbados.
Monika's a mermaid of course, so she loved spending as much time as possible right on the beach. And since it was her birthday trip after all, I happily obliged.
And although we did the pomp & circumstance of her birthday in Toronto before we left (complete with tons of gifts and candle to blow out), we still indulged in cake and champagne in our poolside cabana. You know my stance on this kind of stuff - no celebration should every be overlooked!
The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate. -- Oprah Winfrey
Going away for a birthday is highly recommended! I did the same for my 30th earlier this year. Our week in the Caribbean was seriously so refreshing!
