Thursday night, as I sat in my office overlooking the Bow River, I heard rumblings about evacuations throughout the city due to some kind of flooding. It was around 7:00 pm and I knew I had to hammer out another couple hours of work before I could go home. My colleagues and I continued working, casually looking past our laptops at the rising river gushing past our 11th floor window. About an hour later, we checked Twitter to see that our corner of downtown – one of the neighborhoods closest to the river – was also being flagged for mandatory evacuation. My team and I reluctantly packed up for the day and though that it may be smart to grab our laptops in case we might have trouble getting into downtown the following day. The time was around 8:00 pm, and as I descended the elevator to the lobby, the feel of chaos and uncertainty in downtown Calgary was almost palpable. It was raining heavily and in the distance, sirens and alarms could be heard.
I headed to my downtown apartment, where once again upon checking Twitter, we decided it might be a good idea to self-vacate to my parents’ home in the suburbs, in case we might have trouble accessing downtown the following morning. So we grabbed some clothes for the next day and made our way out of downtown. Little did we know that we would not be returning until well into this week. The intensity of this flood situation is still being assessed, and as it stands, most of downtown is without heat and electricity until further notice. The City of Calgary is still currently in a state of emergency and we have no idea when we might be able to return to our homes or our offices. The above is the most appropriate flood attire I could come up with, rummaging through my university clothes in my old room at home. Don’t judge.
